Minivan vs. SUV: Which One Should You Buy?
Purchasing a car is a big decision due to the finances entailed in it. If you have a big family, small sedans or others cars are not suitable for you. In most cases, you are left with the choice between a minivan or SUV. The biggest question most car buyers have is which is the best family car? Read on to find out.
SUV: Advantages and Disadvantages
Most SUVs are spacious enough to accommodate six to seven adults comfortably. They offer three rows of seating and even passengers sitting in the third-row have enough room to stretch out. The second- and third-row seats can be folded flat to make additional room for cargo. SUVs have higher ground clearance which ensures you can drive it on rugged terrain without worrying about scratches to the underbody. Back in old days, SUVs were known as fuel guzzlers but modern SUVs are fuel-efficient and you can get up to 30 mpg on the highway. SUVs are considered premium vehicles and have standard safety features like airbags, traction control, anti-lock brakes and many more. The higher ground clearance of the SUV ensures you can safely drive it in swampy areas or floods. Also, sitting up higher also means you have a better view of the road ahead and you can see the obstacles more clearly when driving off-road.
The transmission and differentials of the SUV help it deliver good off-road performance. Most SUVs have four-wheel drive which helps when driving in hilly areas and on rugged terrain where no minivan can go.
Some of the disadvantages of the SUV are the high ground clearance because it makes it difficult for children to get in and out of the car. Also, a heavier frame can affect the fuel efficiency of the SUV.
Minivan: Advantages and Disadvantages
The minivan is a perfect family car for many reasons. The car has enough space for six to seven adult passengers and even the passengers sitting in the last row are comfortably seated. The second- and third-row seats can be folded flat to make room for luggage. Minivans also have sliding doors that are a unique characteristic. Sliding doors open wide and make it easy for passengers to get in and out. It also helps with easy loading and unloading of luggage and cargo.
One unique advantage of sliding doors is that you can even get in and out of the car in tight parking spaces without much effort. The minivan has a lower ground clearance that ensures your kids can get in and out of the car easily without any adult’s help. The lower ground clearance also enhances the handling of the car. The lighter frame of the minivan allows it to deliver good fuel efficiency, up to 22 mpg in the city and up to 25 mpg on highways.
Some drawbacks of the minivan are that you have limited options when it comes to selecting a minivan. Also, you don’t have many drivetrain options and you are more likely to get engines that run on gas and not on diesel. It is hard to find minivans with four-wheel drive and the lower ground clearance shuns the minivan’s off-road capability.
