Should You Buy an Electric Car or a Hybrid?

Should You Buy an Electric Car or a Hybrid?

If you are interested in buying an environmentally friendly car, you have two options: an electric car or a hybrid. So which car you should buy? We give you more information about both green automotive technologies to help you decide.

Things to Know About Electric Cars

An electric car has an electric traction motor which propels the vehicle. The electric motor draws power from a large battery pack that consists of thousands of Li-ion rechargeable cells connected in series. An electric car does not have an internal combustion engine and it does not use any kind of fossil fuel. This means you would never have to visit a gas station after buying an electric car

How Are Electric Cars Recharged?

An electric car comes with a charge port. You can charge an electric car at a public charging station or at home. The onboard charger of the electric car converts AC power into DC to charge the battery. The time to recharge the battery fully depends on the size of the battery and the power and speed of the charging point. For example, an electric car with a 60kWh battery would take just 8 hours to charge from empty.

Things to Know About Hybrid Cars

A hybrid car features two engines: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. A hybrid car can run on either engine or also use the power of both engines simultaneously for better performance. Since the car has an internal combustion engine, you need to take your hybrid car to a gas station just like a traditional car.

How Are Hybrid Cars Recharged?

A standard hybrid car does not have a charging port and you cannot charge it at a charging station. The battery in a hybrid car is charged through the electricity generated by the brakes being engaged. This technology is known as regenerative braking, where the energy is extracted and stored for later use. However, you also have plug-in hybrid models which offer the option to charge the battery at charging station.

Should You Buy an Electric Car or a Hybrid?

The answer to this question involves several factors like the price of the car, maintenance and operational charges.

  • Electric cars are expensive; their price is 70 percent higher than traditional cars. Also, battery replacements costs are higher. However, an electric car has the lowest operation costs as it uses only electric power. The average cost of electricity is 12 cents per kWh. If your electric car runs 15,000 miles per year, the total operating costs would be $540.
  • The cost of the Hybrid car is 20 percent higher than a traditional car. The operational and maintenance costs are only marginally less than traditional cars, as the systems are more similar.

An electric car and a hybrid car are both green vehicles but the former is more environmentally friendly. An electric car is more ideal for city driving where charging infrastructure is available while the hybrid car is suitable for people who want a greener vehicle and go off-road or do not live near charging stations.
